The Power of A Mentor

FACT: Did you know that a real, trusted mentor can have a powerful impact on your life? There are great rewards in being mentored by someone and in being a mentor. Mentors are commonly known for the values they exhibit, their possibility faith, their vision, ability to guide, give sound advice, and counsel others. It’s said that behind every good man is a good woman. Well, the same can be said of mentors. Behind every successful person, you will likely find a mentor connected to their success.

Mentors can help aide in one's overall life successes, well-being and life transformations. So much so, the following personalities likely wouldn't have reached their full potential and gained success in life without one. I know for sure that I wouldn't be writing this blog, if it wasn't for the help and encourage of my mentor.

WHO INSPIRED THEM

Oprah Winfrey, Founder of OWN/The Oprah Winfrey Show – inspired by the late Maya Angelou, Author and Poet
Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook – inspired by the late Steve Jobs, Apple Inc., CEO
Walter Cronkite, the late CBS Anchorman – by his Journalism High School Teacher, Fred Birney
Yves St. Laurent, the late Fashion Designer – inspired by Christian Dior, another well-known Fashion Designer
Bill Gates, Cofounder of Microsoft – inspired by CEO of Berkshire Hathaway
Ray Charles, the late Musician – inspired by music legend, Quincy Jones
Clint Eastwood, Actor – inspired by his grandmother

The personalities listed above, faced significant challenges and adversities, and were likely told that they would never make it, succeed, or be SOMEBODY in life! Even Walt Disney, the creator of Disneyland, was told, "he lacked imagination and had no good ideas," by a newspaper editor in Kansas City. Do these statements sound as familiar to you as they do to me? The truth is--life is filled with really good times, and awesome opportunities, but also includes challenging moments and obstacles, as you pursue your efforts to fulfill great dreams and achieve success. You may be thinking, where do I even begin; how do I gain the momentum on my journey; what does it take to fulfill my dream and become the great inventor, creator, designer (you fill in the blank) I want to be? How can I come out on the other side and WIN in life?

Here’s the critical part! Don’t keep going it alone. Ask for help and guidance if you need it. Think about bringing an unbiased person into your life that you can trust (like those listed above did). Then, challenge yourself to be OPEN-MINDED and willing to humble yourself to hear the voice of someone else, besides your own. Take a leap of faith and trust that their guidance can have a positive impact on your life; like Maya's guidance did in Oprah's life. Look how her life turned out. Don’t be ashamed or embarrassed to share—whether it’s a hope, a dream, desire, or something that seems to be a far-reaching goal. I assure you it will be worth it!

I asked for help and I am so thankful that I have had and still have a great mentor in my life to help me along the way. He is referenced in the quote above. He is a true visionary, who has taken the time to listen, coach and give great guidance in many areas of my life. So much so, that I consider it an honor to be able to mentor individuals who come into my life.

Here's your opportunity to take a stand and be free of the fear of failure or life's challenges as you pursue the impossible dreams. For sure, challenges are meant to stand around and keep you paralyzed. But, know this, with a little mentoring, you can achieve what many believe to be the IMPOSSIBLE!

Now, take a page from the books of those mentioned above, and forge ahead to pursue your greatest dream. Think broad and don't limit yourself. You will discover through this journey that you will yourself, become a great mentor to others in need along the way.
